- How are the individuals selected to receive help?
- Why Cape Verde?
- Can our organization here in the US help you?
- What organizations do you work with in Cape Verde?
- Who are your staff members in Cape Verde?
- Why would I choose the Ashby Foundation for my support?
Individuals are selected based on need as determined by the local Ashby
Foundation employees. This evaluation process is extremely easy because the assistance from the Ashby Foundation comes with a requirement for community service
and only individuals that are truly needy will apply for our assistance.
Like most of the African nations, humanitarian assistance is sorely needed,
yet because of its small size Cape Verde is often overlooked by sources of
aid.
Only about 50% of the population has electricity and only about 25% has running
water. The Ashby Foundation chose to work in Cape Verde because the
people are friendly, caring and motivated to improve their education and
conditions. They are also blessed to have a honest and forward thinking democratic government.
Cape Verde has relatively little crime and the small population makes it
possible for the foundation to have a substantial impact on the needs there.
We have had a number of U.S.organizations donate aid through our foundation including wheelchairs, hospital supplies and school uniforms. We have warehouse facilities and a volunteer structure of local Cape Verdeans
to handle distribution across six of the islands that make it fast and easy to
get help directly where it is needed.
We work closely with many public and private schools and governments entities. We also have close affiliation with non-profit organizations including
Fundação Infancia Feliz, the foundation of the 1st Lady of Cape Verde and Morabi, a women's organization that works with micro enterprise lending.
The foundation has seven paid Cape Verdean employees in Cape Verde that direct the efforts
of hundreds of volunteers. Please click here for
the names and contact information for the staff in Cape Verde.
The bottom line is that the Ashby Foundation doesn't receive any government
funding or aid grants. The Foundation is funded by personal donations
principally from Ashby family members. As a result we are extremely
careful to make sure that overhead is kept extremely low and that aid is
provided directly to the end recipients. You won't find a more efficient
or effective humanitarian aid organization.
